NREMT exam day checklist.

The 72-hour countdown, what Pearson VUE actually inspects, and how the CAT decides when to shut off.

72 hours before

  • Confirm your Pearson VUE appointment time, test center address, and check-in time.
  • Run one final 40-question adaptive practice — don't cram new material.
  • Print or screenshot your Authorization to Test (ATT) email from NREMT.
  • Lay out two forms of ID (one government-issued photo ID; names must match your NREMT profile exactly).
  • Set two alarms.

Night before

  • No new material. Review your wrong-answer log only.
  • Eat a normal dinner — don't experiment.
  • Pack: IDs, ATT, glasses if you use them, quarters for the locker if needed.
  • In bed by 10pm. Sleep matters more than one more flashcard.

Morning of

  • Eat protein + complex carbs. Skip the giant coffee if you're not used to it.
  • Arrive 30 minutes early. Late = automatic reschedule + fee.
  • Use the restroom before check-in. Breaks stop the clock but eat into your session limit.
  • Leave your phone, smartwatch, hat, and jacket in the locker.

At check-in

  • Present two IDs. Signature and photo required on the primary.
  • Palm-vein scan and photograph taken.
  • Pockets emptied, sleeves shown, glasses inspected.
  • You'll get an erasable note board and marker — no scratch paper.

During the exam

  • EMT: 70–120 questions, up to 2 hours. AEMT: 100–135, up to 2h 15m. Paramedic: 80–150, up to 2h 30m.
  • It's a CAT — you cannot skip or return to a question.
  • The system stops when it's 95% confident in a pass or fail. That can be as early as 70 items.
  • Read every question twice. First-instinct is usually right — don't change without a reason.
  • Difficulty stays high on purpose. Feeling like you're failing is normal.

Not allowed in the room

  • Phones, smartwatches, fitness bands
  • Hats, hoodies, jackets (unless medically required and pre-approved)
  • Food, drink, gum, water bottles
  • Personal calculators — one is provided on-screen
  • Scratch paper or your own pens

Frequently asked

How long until I get my results?
Most candidates see results in the NREMT portal within 24–48 hours (business days). The Pearson VUE center does NOT release scores.
What happens if the exam shuts off at 70 questions?
Nothing bad. The CAT stops when it's statistically certain of a pass or fail. Length has no bearing on the outcome.
Can I take a break?
Yes — unscheduled breaks are allowed, but the clock keeps running on the total appointment time and you must re-check in with palm scan on return.
What if I fail?
You can retest after 15 days. NREMT allows up to 3 attempts before requiring remedial training. Use the diagnostic feedback to target your weak areas.
