- What is the difference between NREMT certification and state licensure?
- NREMT certification is a national credential that says you met the National Registry's cognitive and psychomotor standards. State licensure is permission to practice EMS in that specific state. Most states require NREMT certification first, then you apply for a state license or certification card.
- Do all states require NREMT certification?
- Most states use NREMT certification as the standard entry credential, but a few states have their own exams or accept equivalent credentials. Always check your state EMS office's current rules before enrolling in a program.
- How long is EMT school?
- Most EMT programs run roughly 150–180 hours of classroom, lab, and clinical time. AEMT and Paramedic programs add substantially more hours and clinical rotations.
- What is EMS reciprocity?
- Reciprocity lets an already-certified provider from another state or the NREMT become licensed in a new state without repeating the entire training program. It usually requires a current NREMT card, a state application, and sometimes a background check or additional exam.
- What is the EMS Compact?
- The Recognition of EMS Personnel Licensure Interstate Compact (REPLICA) lets EMS providers practice across participating state lines under a privilege to practice. Over 40 states and territories are members. It does not replace your home-state license; it extends it for cross-border work.
