Formula

MAP ≈ (2 × DBP + SBP) / 3

Diastolic is weighted 2× because roughly two-thirds of the cardiac cycle is spent in diastole. The full formula (DBP + 1/3 pulse pressure) gives the same result.

  • ≥ 65 mmHg — general perfusion floor for sepsis / shock.
  • ≥ 80–90 mmHg — TBI / cerebral perfusion protection.
  • < 65 mmHg — start fluids, consider pressors per protocol.

What is the MAP formula?
MAP ≈ (2 × diastolic + systolic) / 3. It weights diastolic more heavily because the heart spends about two-thirds of the cardiac cycle in diastole.
What is a normal MAP?
65–100 mmHg is considered adequate for organ perfusion in most adults. Below 65 mmHg, end-organ perfusion (kidneys, brain) starts to fail.
Why does MAP matter more than systolic BP?
MAP reflects the average pressure driving blood into tissues. A patient with SBP 100 and DBP 40 has worse perfusion than one at 100/70 despite identical systolics.
What MAP is the sepsis / shock target?
Surviving Sepsis guidelines target MAP ≥ 65 mmHg. In head injury, many systems target MAP ≥ 80–90 mmHg to protect cerebral perfusion.
