What to Expect on NREMT Exam Day (Hour by Hour)

Most test-day anxiety comes from not knowing what happens at the Pearson VUE center. Here's the hour-by-hour reality, plus the small logistics that catch candidates off guard.

The night before

• Pack: two valid IDs (one government photo), your ATT letter is not required but bring the confirmation.
• No studying after 8 PM — diminishing returns and worse sleep.
• Set two alarms. Plan to arrive 30 minutes early.

Arrival and check-in

Arrive 30 minutes early. Late arrivals may be turned away. You'll go through ID check, a palm-vein scan, and a full pocket-empty inspection. Watches, phones, notes, hats, and jackets go into a locker. Pull your pockets inside-out to show they're empty — this is standard.

In the testing room

• You get an erasable note board and marker — no scratch paper.
• The clock is visible on screen; you can't pause it.
• Cameras and a proctor watch the room. Any movement away from the workstation ends the test.
• Bathroom breaks are allowed but the clock keeps running and you'll be re-scanned.

The test itself

EMT: 70–120 questions in up to 2 hours. AEMT: 100–135 in 2 hours 15 minutes. Paramedic: 80–150 in 2 hours 30 minutes. The CAT can end at any question inside that range once it has enough data to score you.

The 'I failed' feeling

The test is calibrated to keep you around 50% correct. Almost every passer walks out convinced they failed. If the exam ended before the maximum, that's neither good nor bad — the CAT stops whenever it has enough certainty.

After the test

Results post to your registry account in 24–48 hours (occasionally same day). Do not obsess over refreshing — check once a day and log off.
